The travellers had signed up for a group tour around parts of Turkey. They were hesitant as they had a challenging (rushed) time in India, however they were up for the challenge. And, they were glad they did. In a small group of ten, with an excellent guide called ‘G’ they got to hear, learn and see more of this great country other than just Istanbul.

Gallipoli
The journey there was a surprise with completely random snowfalls along the way. Despite falling temperatures, the group all reminded themselves of the Anzac spirit and pocketed their comments on the weather. The battlefields of WW1, Anzac Cove, Chunuk Bair Memorials, The Nek, original tunnels and trenches and the Lone Pine Cemetery were all visited. It was quite an emotional experience for all.

Troy
Ah, this was what Mr X was waiting for. As far back as his childhood he had always been interested in Greek and Roman mythology and history. As far as Turkey goes, they joined in on the fighting. Ms X however surprisingly grew to love some of the stories, especially about the Trojan horse. (She just hoped they were true). It was a WOW moment for Mr X, similar but not better than he experienced when he saw Rome’s Coliseum.

Behramkale
The group had a glimpse into traditional Turkish village life in this spot. A great place to wander and relax with a cup of Turkish tea.

Kusadasi
Our travellers LOVED Kusadasi. To understand this place, think of a Turkish version of Lorne in Victoria, only bigger. It was home for 2 nights. Rooftop terraces, beach, cruise port, holiday shops and lots of restaurants.

Ephesus
Move over Troy, as Mr X found a new challenger. Ephesus being much younger than Troy and commanding a greater area was pretty impressive, especially the very intact library facade. What surprised Ms X was the fact that tourists were allowed to climb all over the ruins. She did not like that!

Pamukkale and Hierapolis
A visit to the magnificent white calcium terraces of Pamukkale provided an opportunity to paddle in the magical, therapeutic thermal waters before a wander through the ancient city of Hierapolis.

A great experience was had by all our travellers who gained so much more knowledge of this country. An experienced local guide for the trip as well as a fantastic group with whom to travel, added to the wonderful memories they take with them of Turkey. (An added highlight was an engagement…. Congrats to Jenna and Aaron!)
